Newdigs wins Not One, But Two RBJ Best of the Web 2012 Awards

This March, Newdigs.com was recognized at Rochester Business Journal’s Best of the Web awards.  We were nominated in the Real Estate and Construction category, along side Morgan Communities and PayRentChex, and came away with the win.  As excited as we were to win, coming in second place overall, with the Rochester Business Journal Best of the Web Silver Award, to PayChex , an eleven billion dollar company, blew our minds.

Since our public beta launch at the Imagine RIT Festival, in May 2010, we’ve been working to prove our concept locally before taking the site to every corner of the nation. We see these awards as recognition that we’ve built a service Rochester has a real need for, and that the community is truly embracing us as a locally grown technology start-up. We’ve got our foundation built, and we’re ready to take the Newdigs platform national.

This summer, as we shift gears into building a national awareness of our brand, be ready for a new face on Newdigs… We’ll be the same old newdigs deep down, but with new some additional functionality, more updates as we hit other metros, and as always, we’ll be looking for ways to continuously improve the user experience through the site’s look and feel and flow.

Thanks Rochester, for embracing our little technology start-up, and thank you Rochester Business Journal for the two Best of the Web Awards!

Newdigs is a finalist for a Rochester Business Journal (2012) Best of the Web Award! This is our first Best of the Web Award nomination, and we are honored. We are a finalist in the category of “Real Estate.” We’re up against two other fantastic examples of web excellence, Morgan Communities, and PayRentChex, who we’d like to take a moment to congratulate and wish good luck.

We’ve been quiet lately, holed away in our programming dungeon cranking out tons of great new products to be introduced this year… so we were shocked at this sudden, unexpected recognition! The winners will be announced at a ceremony on March 13th. Wish us luck! We won’t be quiet much longer… you’ll be hearing a lot more from us in the weeks to come as we make some big announcements.

What’s the best part of moving into a new place? Decorating, of course!  And then showing it off.

Have fun designing for your apartment

We created a tumblr page to serve as an interactive, community-driven inspiration board for decorating your new digs. Our goal is “to create a resource for people to share ideas and inspiration on how to decorate and customize your new digs,” eventually becoming “a one-stop source for all home improvement projects”!

How does it work? If you already have a tumblr account, you can follow us by clicking here. (If you’re not on tumblr already, it’s free and easy to set up an account and you can do that by clicking here.) We want your submissions! Show us pictures of your new digs and share your tips, tricks, and resources. Know a great hardware store in your neighborhood? Tell us about it! Had a great experience working with a local designer or decorator? Let us know!

Maybe you’re not the DIY-type, and that’s fine with us! You can always reblog any visual inspiration you find on the web that you think others would be interested in! There are so many ideas out there and we want to compile them all! We want to build a community of DIYers, weekend designers, and home renovators.  Let’s make the Newdigs Tumblr page the ultimate in Rochester apartment living resources!

Our New Look! – updated

Updated!we’ve put out a big code update. It fixes a majority of the issues on this list, and though there are a couple problems still nagging us (photo upload for listings!), a majority of things are working!

As you might’ve noticed, we’ve had a bit of a facelift at Newdigs.com.  We’ve been hard at work trying to make the site better reflect a bit of our flair, and I think we’ve got it!  That said, you’ll notice a lot of little snags, and a couple of really big ones.  Here’s a not-so-conclusive list that I’ll be editing throughout the period of our update, until they’re all gone:

  • Editing properties / listings is broken.  This should be fixed this weekend.
  • The option to create an account has been removed, and won’t go back up until the listings thing is fixed.
  • Toggling advanced search options won’t modify your search results.
  • Flagging listings (for content, whether questionable or awesome) is broken.

Those are the big issues and they’ll be fixed as soon as we possibly can, from top to bottom.  If you spot any other issues, please feel free to drop us a note using the little “chat” icon nestled on the right side of your page.

- Looking forward to hearing from you all!

You are a Community Storyteller

Dinosaur BBQ, Rochester, NY If you’re not already familiar with the Newdigs story, we are a humble local start-up with large aspirations. We want to simultaneously bring you the best apartment search experience you’ll ever have, the easiest way for landlords to market and manage their properties, and a robust blog that will help our users get to know the rental market intimately, so that they’re capable of making very informed decisions. Its a lot on the plate of a budding, incubated, locally boot-strapped start-up… so we’re reaching out to you, the Rochester community, for some help.

We need all hands on deck, and we know you’ve got a story to tell! Whether you’re an active member of your neighborhood, or a passive enjoyer of its restaurants & boutiques, you could probably tell us something about what it is to live where you live. Your stories will help not only fellow Rochestererians get to know the other neighborhoods near them, but they’ll help future residents decide where to live when they get to town. Plus, becoming a community storyteller will give you a creative outlet to share your opinions on the finest and funnest things that Rochester has to offer: events, cafes, restaurants, parks, concerts… the list could go on for miles. Your stories shape our neighborhoods. And, whether you’re doing it just for fun, or because you like to write and need an outlet, or because you’re looking to become better known in your community, becoming a Newdigs storyteller can help open doors of opportunity, sometimes in totally unexpected ways.

If you’re interested, contact the chief storyteller (that’s me) Kristin Munson:
You can reach me by email: kristin@newdigs.com
On twitter: @mrsmunson OR @newdigsROC OR @newdigs
On Facebook: Newdigs

I can’t wait to hear your stories! Thanks for helping us grow Newdigs into a great company that can make Rochester proud.
