I can’t let the city of Rochester shine alone in the limelight here at Newdigs when it comes to entertainment and fun. Whether you’re a Rochestarian for life or an upstate newbie, the suburbs and surrounding communities can certainly offer you plenty of things to do, places to go, and destinations worth visiting. In fact, I’d argue to say that for almost any city attraction, there’s likely another somewhere in the ‘burbs. For instance:
City: You’re all about doing your holiday shopping at fun places like Parkleigh, which provide unique gift ideas and keep you far away from a mall.
Burbs: Check out Main Street in Pittsford as well as Schoen Place, where the shops are eclectic, fun, and one of a kind. Grab some bubbly for holiday parties at Pittsford Wine & Spirits right in the heart of Pittsford, or head west a few minutes on Rt. 31 and check out One World Goods or Ambiance to check some fun and funky items off your shopping list.
City: Two words: Little Theatre.
Burbs: Get away from the often overwhelming megaplex movie-going experience and catch a flick at Brockport’s Strand Theater. The Little’s got the indie films covered, but if you want to check out a mainstream movie in a more low-key atmosphere, head over to Brockport.
City: You enjoy the proximity of experiencing the outdoors right in the city, such as Cobbs Hill and Highland Parks.
Burbs: An ideal spot during autumn and spring, head up to Charlotte and experience Turning Point Park and Rain Garden, which offers gorgeous views of the Genesee River surrounded by picturesque forests. Dog lovers can head to Greece Canal Park with their pups and use the park’s recently opened dog park. While there, you can also enjoy beautiful views of the Erie Canal, recreation areas, and hiking paths.
City: On any given Sunday, you can be found at your customary brunch spot: Jines, Charlie’s Frog Pond, or Highland Park Diner.
Burbs: East siders can head to Peaches Cafe in Webster, or West side residents can head over to the village of Spencerport and check out Pineview Restaurant for a tasty stack of pancakes.
In or out of the city, you have a lot to do and experience here in Rochester. I’ve only scratched the surface here — check back often for more, and let us know in the comments what you most enjoy doing in Rochester and the suburbs.
